When the Filters Need to Be Changed in Your Car

Your automobile has four primary filters that keep it efficient and running as it should be. Failure to change these filters can cause a number of problems, including engine performance issues such as sputtering; the inability to start your car, truck, or utility vehicle; a reduction in your gas mileage; and even damage to the engine. Heath’s Auto Service would be happy to change every filter in your automobile when it needs it. Here is a list of the common filters and when they should be changed.

Air Filter

Your air filter is in the engine and it cleans the air that flows through the vents and your vehicle’s grille. Without clean air, you run the risk of depositing dirt in the combustion chamber, especially in the cylinders where air and fuel are detonated. A clogged and dirty air filter cannot only cause the engine performance issues discussed above, but it will also reduce your gas mileage significantly. Plan to change the air filter in your automobile every 12,000 miles.

Cabin Air Filter

Most vehicles also have an air filter in the cabin to clean the air before it blows through the vents. This helps to keep you alert and reduces the chances of feeling sick when you are inside your automobile. The cabin air filter removes dirt and dust particles, allergens flowing in from the outside, and even exhaust from the air before it blows through the vents. This air filter has a much longer lifespan than your engine air filter. You need to change it every 30,000 miles.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter also needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. If, however, you have not driven a total of 30,000 miles in two years, it’s important that you change the fuel filter at that time anyway. As with the air filters discussed above, the fuel filter makes sure that the gasoline is clean before it is sprayed into the combustion chamber by the fuel injectors. This not only prevents dirt and grime from getting into the cylinders but also helps to keep your fuel injectors cleaner longer.

Oil Filter

Finally, the oil filter is changed when you have the oil changed. It’s important to always have a clean oil filter; otherwise, you run the risk of introducing dirt and grime onto the moving parts in your engine. This will create friction and overheating problems as well as reduce your engine’s lifespan. Depending on the type of oil that you use in your vehicle’s engine, the oil filter will be changed every 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, or 7,500 miles.
