I’ve Jump-Started My Battery But It Won’t Hold a Charge

If you jump-started a dead battery and it isn’t holding a charge, the problem could be your battery if it is three years old or older. If your battery is relatively new, the issue is more likely that your alternator is going bad. Heath’s Auto Service advises that the alternator keeps the battery charged. This ensures it never discharges completely. A battery that won’t hold a charge is just one sign that the alternator is failing. We are going to list the other signs below.

ALT, GEN, or Battery Light Warning

Alongside the dead battery, you may also end up with an illuminated dashboard warning light. In the case of the alternator, it will either be a battery-shaped light or a GEN or ALT light. Your vehicle’s main computer chip, the engine control unit, turns on these lights to alert you of alternator trouble.

Burning Wires or Rubber Odors

The alternator might also overwork itself and generate more electricity than the maximum of 14.5 volts that it normally generates. When this happens, it overloads your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s electrical system. Consequently, the system will get too hot and you may smell burning wires or rubber.

Dim, Flickering, Overly Bright Lights

Another sign that your alternator is going bad is dim, flickering, or overly bright lights. The latter can be caused by the alternator overworking itself as discussed above. More common, however, are dim and flickering lights that make it difficult for you to see where you are driving at night.

Frequent Engine Stalling

The alternator does more than power the battery; it also powers the spark plugs. A dying alternator can make it difficult for the spark plugs to fire when they should. Consequently, you will end up with an engine that misfires and stalls frequently. Replacing the alternator generally solves the problem.

Growling Sounds in the Engine

If you hear growling sounds coming from your engine, it’s possible you are hearing a faulty alternator. This is an indication that the alternator’s mechanisms have worn out. You might also hear whining noises coming from the engine, and this points to the alternator belt.

Malfunctioning or Slow Accessories

Finally, if your vehicle’s accessories are malfunctioning or too slow, the alternator is not providing enough power to them. Specifically, you may notice a difference in the speed of your power seats and windows, problems with your car radio, and problems with the navigation system.
