Is It Time to Replace My Car’s Water Pump?

Heath’s Auto Service that if you have any of the following problems, it could be time to replace your car’s water pump. The water pump usually lasts about 10 years or 100,000 miles before it goes bad. Below, are the signs that the water pump is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. Do not worry. We can install a new water pump into your car, truck, or C/SUV.

A Water Pump That’s Rusty

If you take a look at your water pump and see that it is rusted, this points to a slow leak out of the pump. Basically, the coolant is leaking out of the pump and puddling around it. There is not enough coolant leaking to drip onto the garage floor. As the coolant rests against the pump’s metal, it will start to corrode it. This corrosion will begin to eat through the water pump.

Coolant on the Garage Floor

Eventually, you will end up with coolant on your garage floor. Unfortunately, this is a sign that the water pump has a serious leak that needs immediate attention. The more coolant that leaks out of the cooling system the higher the chances of your engine overheating. If you see coolant spots or petals underneath your automobile, bring it to our shop right away.

Reduced Coolant Circulation

The thermostat is the cooling system part that opens a valve to release the coolant into the water pump so it can circulate it. The engine relies on this coolant circulation to keep it cool. The maximum temperature your engine should reach is 220 degrees Fahrenheit. If it gets hotter than this because the water pump is not circulating the engine coolant, your engine will overheat.

Strange Growling Noises

Your water pump may also start to protest. You may hear strange growling noises coming from the engine if the pump is wearing out. As an aside, another thing that can affect the water pump’s ability to circulate the coolant through the engine is a loose accessory belt. This belt powers the pump. If it is loose, you may hear whining or squealing noises in the engine.

Overheating Constantly

Finally, as you can imagine, your engine is going to overheat constantly if the water pump is no longer able to push the coolant throughout the engine. If your engine overheats all the time, we recommend you call our shop for a tow to avoid driving your automobile.
