How Can I Tell if My Car Has Transmission Problems?

Transmission problems can be subtle at first, which is why it’s important to know the signs of transmission problems. Heath’s Auto Service is going to list those signs below. If you suspect that your car, truck, or utility vehicle is having a problem in the transmission, we recommend that you have the transmission inspected as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

Check Engine Warning

One of the first things that will happen if the transmission is struggling is your check engine light will come on. This is because this light works as a catch-all for vehicle systems that don’t have lights of their own. It’s always important to heed a check engine warning because nine out of 10 times, these warnings are accurate.

Humming in Neutral

One of the clearest signs that your vehicle’s transmission is struggling is humming noises when the transmission is in neutral. This points to transmission problems including low transmission fluid. On average, you should have your transmission fluid changed every 30,000 miles.

Leaking Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid can leak out of the transmission pan, the pan gasket, the hoses, the seals, or the torque converter among other system parts. Transmission fluid is red and translucent. It leaks from underneath your automobile more toward the center than the engine.

Noisy Gear Shifts

If you hear grinding or squealing every time your transmission shifts gears or you shift gears if you are driving a manual transmission, there is a problem. Grinding or squealing indicates low transmission fluid, worn transmission gears, or a problem with the clutch engaging and disengaging.

Overheating Transmission

Your transmission will overheat if the transmission fluid is too low. You will smell burning coming from underneath your automobile. It’s important to address any hot odors immediately because they can indicate a serious problem that could become dangerous if something were to ignite.

Problems Shifting Gears

Obviously, if your transmission is having problems, it will have problems shifting gears. The transmission may resist going into gear and be unresponsive, it may skip gears in the gear cycle, it may not shift through the gear cycle completely, or it may slip out of gear.

Shaking or Vibrating

Finally, when your vehicle shifts gears or when you shift gears, you shouldn’t feel any shaking or vibration. If you do, you may be low on transmission fluid or there could be something else going on that is wrong in the transmission.
